The report, entitled Official Residences of Canada: Asset Portfolio Condition Report, details the condition of not only the six official residences, but also 50 ancillary buildings – all of which are designated heritage buildings.
The NCC is asking for a staggering $83 million over 10 years to address what it calls “deferred maintenance deficit for all six official residences, as a result of chronic underfunding over many years.”
In addition, a further $25 million per year is required for ongoing maintenance, repairs and renovation projects, according to the report.
The official prime minister’s residence at 24 Sussex Drive is considered to be in critical condition. Justin Trudeau and his family have opted not to live there; instead they live in Rideau Cottage, which is close by.
In addition to 24 Sussex, the other official residences are: Rideau Hall – home of the governor general, Harrington Lake – country residence of the prime minister, Stornoway – home of the official leader of the opposition, The Farm – home of the speaker to the house, 7 Rideau Gate – guest house for official guests of the government.
The report says that approximately 80 per cent of the building portfolio is greater than 50 years old and 20 per cent is greater than 150 years old.
