Reporters Without Borders has released its annual round-up of attacks on media workers and it shows that journalism remains a very dangerous occupation.

The report states that between January 1 – December 1, 2018, 80 media workers were killed (77 men, three women), 348 are imprisoned, 60 are being held hostage and three are missing.

Afghanistan was the world's deadliest country for journalists in 2018, with 15 killed. This was followed by Syria with 11 killed and Mexico where nine journalists were killed.

Violence against journalists has reached unprecedented levels this year and the situation is now critical,” said Reporters Without Borders Secretary-General Christophe Deloire. “The hatred of journalists that is voiced and sometimes very openly proclaimed, by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists."

In terms of overall press freedom, Norway is ranked best in the world and North Korea the worst. A total of 180 countries are listed. Canada is ranked 18th overall.
