The Canadian War Museum in Ottawa has a new photo exhibition showing Canadian Expeditionary Force units before they went overseas in the First World War.

Ready to Serve – Canadian Panoramic Photographs of the First World War, features 12 large format black and white photos depicting recruits at military bases across the country.

“Over 620,000 men and women from across Canada served in the First World War,” said Caroline Dromaguet, acting director general of the Canadian War Museum. “These panoramic photographs are a visual reminder of that moment in time, capturing them on the brink of monumental service and sacrifice.”

Ready to Serve presents 12 of the more than 450 First World War panoramic photographs in the Canadian War Museum’s George Metcalf Archival Collection. The museum regularly features photographs from its archive in its exhibitions. In addition, other museums borrow from the collection to enhance their own shows.

The photos are on display in the lobby of the museum until September 16, 2018, and is free to the public.

Currently, there are no plans to take this exhibition outside of Ottawa.
