Once again, the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa is hosting the annual World Press Photo contest winners.
The 160 winning photographs on display were selected from 73,044 images that were entered in the competition by 4,548 photographers from 125 countries.
“World Press Photo – Exhibition 2018 is a dramatic overview of the year’s most newsworthy events and human experiences, from Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar to young women kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria,” said Caroline Dromaguet, acting director general of the Canadian War Museum. “We are honoured to present this display of the world’s best photojournalism for an 11th consecutive year.”
The awards are given out in eight categories: contemporary issues, environment, general news, long-term projects, nature, people, sports and spot news.
Venezuelan photographer Ronaldo Schemidt won the World Press Photo of the Year for his striking image of a man set on fire by an exploding motorcycle during clashes between protesters and police in Caracas.
Canadian photojournalist Kevin Frayer won second prize in the General News category for his series about Rohingya refugees fleeing into Bangladesh to escape ethnic cleansing. This collection of black and white photographs documents the plight of Rohingya Muslims who were forced to flee after their villages were attacked and their homes burned.
Other outstanding photos include Ami Vitale’s pictures of orphaned and abandoned elephant calves being cared for at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in northern Kenya.
The exhibition is being held in the Barney Danson Theatre from July 20 to August 12, 2018. Admission is free.
Following its presentation in Ottawa, the photographs will travel to Montreal, Toronto and Chicoutimi.
