A new photo exhibition starts today at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and it presents life in the Middle East in a whole new light.

She Who Tells a Story features 85 images from 12 female photographers who were born in the region.

Some have left the Middle East while others continue to live there.

The exhibition is divided into three themes: Deconstructing Orientalism, New Documentary and Constructing Identity.

“The sophisticated and provocative images present the Middle East with a fresh perspective,” said Stephen Quick, director general of the Canadian War Museum. “Ranging from fine art to photojournalism, the stunning photographs challenge Western conceptions and provide insight into the contemporary social and political landscape of Iran and the Arab world.”

The photographs, which are both personal and political, are rich in detail and meticulous in design.

Iranian photographer, Shadi Ghadirian has 13 photographs in the exhibition and they are particularly interesting. The series called Nil, Nil (2008), shows us everyday objects that are typically feminine, but includes objects that symbolize war.

She Who Tells a Story originated at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and has travelled across the United States.

The Canadian War Museum is the first stop for the exhibition outside of the US. The show continues until March 4, 2018.
